One of our favorite events is happening again this year. Days at the Dock will kick off at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 18 with with yet another memorable Talk of the Villages: Local and Underloved at the Hatteras Village Civic Center.

The roundtable discussion will explore what it means to eat local, sustainable seafood, and how consumers and the seafood industry can help protect healthy oceans and support vibrant local fishing communities.

Panelists Jared Auerbach of Red’s Best in Boston, Kelly Harrell with the Alaska Marine Conservation Council in Anchorage, and Mark Marhefka from Abundant Seafood in Mount Pleasant, SC will share personal stories about their experiences charting innovative entrepreneurial and advocacy solutions that promote responsible seafood sourcing.

This year’s Seafood Throwdown will feature chefs from two of Hatteras Island’s most popular restaurants will display their seafood cooking skills in a Seafood Throwdown at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Day at the Docks in Hatteras village.

The free event will take place in the Day at the Docks Food Demo tent located in the parking area at Oden’s Docks.

Guests will see Seth Foutz from Ketch 55 Seafood Grill in Avon and Eric Gill from Breakwater Restaurant in Hatteras prepare dishes using a local seafood ingredient that will be revealed only when the event gets underway.

Throwdown judges are Jared Auerbach, owner of Red’s Best,  a wholsale seafood distributing company based in Boston, commercial fisherman Mark Marhefka who owns Abundant Seafood and sells his catch to Charleston, SC restaurants, and Elizabeth Wiegand,  author of The Outer Banks Cookbook and Food Lovers’ Guide to NC’s Outer Banks, and Carolina Foodie blogger.

Bob Barris and Amy Huggins Gaw will serve as throwdown emcees.  Barris is a real estate broker with Hatteras Realty who is also an accomplished seafood cook and who once worked as a commercial fisherman.  Gaw is owner and founder of Outer Banks SeaSalt and Outer Banks Epicurean, and writes the Salt Shaker column for Coast magazine.

Jeff Aiken, owner of Jeffrey’s Seafood, will provide the secret seafood ingredient and will join Barris and Gaw on stage to talk about what it takes to get seafood from the water to the dinner plate.

The Conetoe Family Life Center in Edgecombe County is providing produce from its community garden for the event.  Students at the Center farm 17 acres and sell produce and honey at farmers’ markets and to grocery stores and restaurants. Income from the project goes into scholarships funds for youth members.  Honey and produce will be available for purchase at Day at the Docks.

The Day at the Docks Seafood Throwdown is sponsored by NC Sea Grant, NC Watermen Foundation, and NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
