Cooke Aquaculture to be sued over violations to Clean Water Act

The Conservation Law Foundation has just issued their notice of intent to file suit against Cooke Aquaculture’s violations of the Clean Water Act.

Cooke Aquaculture is a Canadian company that currently operates 13 Atlantic Salmon farms off the coast of Maine. You may recognize their name from the disastrous escapement of thousands of Atlantic Salmon into the Pacific Ocean that they were responsible for in 2017. While the company no longer operates in WA state thanks to a net pen ban put into place by Commissioner Hilary Franz, they still hold a lot of power in Maine.

We see this as an important step towards holding corporations accountable for the harms done to our ocean environments and the impact that they have on small- and medium-scale seafood producers.
