Great Lakes Fishing Industry Commits to Full Fish Utilization

Pile of small whole silvery fish with large eyes stacked together, likely freshly caught and awaiting processing.

National Fisherman reports that the Great Lakes commercial fishing industry is moving toward full use of every fish caught or processed. Forty-four companies — including commercial fishing businesses, aquaculture producers, and seafood processors — have signed the 100 percent Great Lakes Fish Pledge. That commitment means using all parts of the fish, including heads, guts, skin, and scales, instead of sending them to landfills.

Together, the pledged companies handle more than 30 million pounds of fish annually, about 90 percent of the Great Lakes’ commercial catch. Supporters say full fish utilization can reduce waste, create new products like fish leather, oil, and meal, and support fishing economies and stewardship across the Great Lakes.
